'Fear The Walking Dead' Season 2 News, Spoilers: Series Will Not Tackle Zombie Apocalypse Cause, EP Says

While fans have hoped that "Fear the Walking Dead," the prequel/spin-off to AMC's popular "The Walking Dead," would someday explore the cause of the zombie outbreak that led to the events in both "TWD" and "FearTWD," executive producer Greg Nicotero now says that "Fear" will follow the lead of "TWD" and will not be going there either.

Nicotero recently spoke about the new season of "Fear the Walking Dead" in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "We've never really wanted to go there," the "FTWD" boss said. "I know on 'The Walking Dead' we made a conscious decision to not open that can of worms. I think it's safe to say that 'Fear' follows the same rule – it's really not about how it's happening. It's about how you survive it. That ship has sailed."

The producers of "Fear the Walking Dead" previously confirmed that it will not cross over with "The Walking Dead" and, as such, hope that it could tell the backstory of new "TWD" villain Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) have been quashed.

Nevertheless, there's a lot to look forward to in the new season of "Fear" even if the series won't involve "TWD" and/or any of the characters in that show.

"Fear the Walking Dead" executive producer Dave Erickson spoke to Deadline about the recently debuted season 2 and teased what's ahead for some of its main characters.

As for whether or not fans will get to see never-before-seen sides of Madison (Kim Dickens) in the new season, Erickson said, "I think we're going to see a leader."

"I think we're going to see a woman who has certain strength and ability to go to a violent place when it's necessary and then the ability to compartmentalize that," he explained, adding that viewers have already seen a glimpse of the character's tenacity in season 1.

Erickson also said that Travis (Cliff Curtis) will try to keep his promise of taking care of his son, Chris (Lorenzo James Henrie), something that will take their relationship to "interesting" places over the course of the second season.

"Fear the Walking Dead" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
