Five Bible Verses to Help Battle Addiction
Christians aren't perfect. We are saved alright, but make no mistake — we are still capable of doing wrong. No matter how determined we are to forsake old habits, some traces of bad behavior may still be left in our consciousness. They could still rear their pointy heads in our weakest moments.
From thoughts of envy, self-pity, whining, gossip and pride, to the more subtle acts of swearing, cheating, gluttony, laziness, and ill will, each one of us has our own addiction. Others struggle with bigger addictions to food, alcohol, shopping, lust, etc.
God commands us to strive for holiness which entails resisting temptation and fighting the urge to give in to our weaknesses. But we are not left to our own devices in confronting this battle. The Lord is actually with us speaking through His word. All we have to do is flip the pages, listen intently and take to heart every message.
Here now are five Bible verses to help battle addiction.
1. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10
Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
2. 1 Corinthians 6:12
"I have the right to anything," you say – but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything" – but I will not be mastered by anything.
3. 1 Corinthians 15:33
Do not be misled: "Bad company corrupts good character."
4. James 4:7
Submit yourselves then to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
5. Titus 2:12
It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.
