Five Things to Avoid When Sharing Jesus With Others
You have accepted the Lord Jesus Christ into your heart as your savior and you've been baptized by the Holy Spirit. Now you are fired up and itching to do the Great Commission of spreading the Word to the ends of the earth. However, preparation is needed for such an important task as evangelizing. Plan your actions first and study carefully these things that you should avoid.
1. Don't be overzealous.
Perhaps you're thinking of mounting your own one-man crusade by going to a crowded place and shouting "Prepare ye sinners for the coming of the Lord!" This might not be such a good idea. Why not start with your circle of friends first – share it to them one by one. As a child of God, you should represent him in a respectable manner.
2. Don't be too pushy.
Be sensitive to how your friends take your sharing. Don't feel bad if you're not able to convince all of them. Some of them may listen to you politely but won't agree with you, while others will get uncomfortable and change the subject. Don't push it if this happens. You've done your job of planting the seed of the Word in their hearts. Leave the rest to God.
3. Do not criticize.
The best way to express your faith is showing respect to the person you're sharing the Word with. Don't put down his/her beliefs and ideas. Not offending your listener affords a higher possibility for you two to sit down and talk again in the future where you can share some more.
4. Do not debate.
Some Christians share for the wrong reasons, one of which is to boast their knowledge on the wrong practices of other religions. That is one of the easiest ways to turn off a potential Christian. Don't lose sight of the fact that the central figure of evangelization is Jesus.
5. Do not scare them.
Years of evangelizing has taught active Christians that the most effective way to minister is by sharing God's love instead of His anger. Do not threaten your listener with hell and condemnation if they refuse to accept Christ there and then. Remember how long it took for you to accept the invitation, so be patient.
