Freddie Roach News: Renowned Trainer Names His Fighter Of The Year, Denies Being Offered To Coach Ronda Rousey

Renowned boxing coach Freddie Roach has named his very own Fighter of the Year for 2015.

The seven-time Boxing Writers Association of America Trainer of the Year awardee recently spoke to Fight Hype, where he named Gennady Golovkin as his chosen one for the said title.

"I do like Triple G a lot," Roach says in the Fight Hype video. "He's a good fighter, he's very smart. I like the way he maneuvers, works the ring. I think he's a very, very solid fighter."

The 55-year-old trainer adds that he is looking forward to Golovkin's next fight, which he describes as a "big test" for the undefeated Kazakh knockout artist. Golovkin is currently slated to make his return on April 23rd at possibly the Madison Square Garden in New York, against a still undetermined opponent.

For 2015 alone, "GGG" scored three stoppage victories against formidable opponents. He kicked off his year with an 11th round stoppage against Martin Murray in February, scored a sixth round technical knockout victory against Willie Monroe, and most recently, finished David Lemieux within eight rounds when they met in October.

Golovkin currently holds an undefeated record of 34-0, with 31 victories by stoppage.

He is also the WBA (Super) and IBO middleweight champion, as well as the WBC interim 160-pound champion, making him the mandatory challenger for Saul Alvarez's WBC undisputed crown.

Roach also clarified rumors that he was being tapped to coach former UFC bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey. Former world champion boxer Holly Holm knocked out Rousey during their November 15th bout at UFC 193.

After the fight, Rousey's coach Edmond Tarverdyan took a lot of criticism for the way he mentored his fighter during the bout. This has made people to suggest that Rousey should switch coaches, leading to talks about Roach taking on the said job.

Roach, however, immediately shut down the said rumors.

"People keep asking if I'm gonna train Ronda Rousey and so forth, but they are just rumors," he explained in a separate interview with Boxingscene. "There has been no official request."
