Georges St-Pierre News: Former Long-Time Welterweight Champ Rumored To Fight Conor McGregor?
Former long-time UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre could face current featherweight champion Conor McGregor in the future.
After his 13-second victory over José Aldo at UFC 194 last December 12, "The Notorious" immediately declared his intent to move up in weight and fight Rafael Dos Anjos for the lightweight title, while holding the 145-pound belt.
The UFC did listen to his statements and McGregor is now booked to face the Brazilian champion at UFC 197 on March 5 in Las Vegas. The situation could open up a rare case in the UFC, since McGregor would be the first fighter to hold two belts in different weight classes, simultaneously.
This has apparently gotten the attention of St-Pierre, who is still on an indefinite hiatus and has remained open-ended about making a UFC return. In a report by Roy Billington for Bloody Elbow, "GSP's" former manager Stephane Patry opened up the idea of his ex-client fighting McGregor.
Patry first noted that the Canadian mixed martial arts fighter could "easily get down" to lightweight and compete. He added that if McGregor does end up winning the lightweight belt as well, St-Pierre is open to facing him.
"So if McGregor becomes champion of 145 and 155 pounds, and St-Pierre takes the time to get his weight down in a healthy and intelligent way, do you not think that the UFC would not want to put on the biggest fight in its history?" Patry rhetorically asked, according to the Bloody Elbow report.
St-Pierre last fought in November 2013 at UFC 167, when he completed his ninth successful title defense against Johny Hendricks. It was a fight that was marred by controversy, as it was St-Pierre who still emerged victorious despite Hendricks' performance, which was highly debated upon.
After the bout, St-Pierre declared his indefinite hiatus from the sport, dropping the welterweight title in the process.
His absence led to the UFC holding a fight for the vacant title in March 2014, in which Hendricks won against Robbie Lawler.
