'Girls' Season 5 News, Spoilers: Allison Williams on Former Co-Star's Return, What's Ahead for Marnie

Sunday night's episode of "Girls" saw Marnie (Allison Williams) reuniting with her ex and subsequently making a major decision about her marriage to Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach).

The episode, titled "The Panic in Central Park," also saw the return of actor Christopher Abbott, who played Marnie's boyfriend Charlie in the first two seasons of the HBO drama/comedy.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Abbott agreed to return for a brief cameo after "Girls" star and creator Lena Dunham pitched him the idea for the episode, which was reportedly inspired by the 1971 film "The Panic in the Needle Park." Abbott's abrupt exit at the end of the show's second season gave rise to rumors that he was "at odds with" Dunham over the direction in which the series was going.

In "The Panic in Central Park," Marnie and Charlie run into each other and end up going on a romp around the city and spending the night together. The next day, Marnie realizes that Charlie has been using heroin and heads back to her apartment, where she asks her husband for a divorce.

Williams recently spoke to EW about reuniting with Abbott for the episode. According to the actress, who hadn't seen Abbott since the latter left "Girls" in 2013, though the scenes felt "very familiar," she was just as baffled about her co-star as Marnie was about Charlie.

"I just let her ask them, and I kind of kept myself out of it because I felt like all of it was probably useful to the dynamic that we had to portray," she said.

"All I know is that there was something very hilariously meta about it because I hadn't seen him since he left the show, so there was a very weird real layer on top of everything," Williams told The Hollywood Reporter. "It was great to have him back and it's funny how quickly a dynamic comes back."

Williams also talked about how Marnie deals with the previous episode's events in the next episode of "Girls." According to the actress, while Marnie will definitely be breaking the news of her divorce to her friends, she will keep her encounter with Charlie to herself. "…It almost feels too private to even share," she said.

"Girls" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.
