'Godzilla: Monster Planet' News: Mankind Brings Out the Giant Robots in Franchise's First Anime Feature Film

The iconic monster Godzilla hits the anime feature film scene for the first time this November. And it seems that humanity may have just found a way to bring the infamous kaiju down once and for all, as seen in the newest promotional video for the upcoming CG-anime movie, Godzilla: Kaijuu Wakusei (Godzilla: Monster Planet)."

In a futuristic world where Godzilla has reigned supreme for the past 20,000 years, mankind takes one final stand to reclaim their home planet after failing to find a habitable location in the distant stars.

Humanity has been forced to leave Earth as a result of decades of losing against Godzilla and the other giant monsters in its league. But with nowhere else to go, a young man named Haruo decides to spearhead a return voyage. The ship successfully makes it back home, but home is no longer theirs to claims as the ecosystem has now evolved, pushing humans down to the bottom of the food chain.

It is for this reason that humanity starts building and subsequently piloting giant mecha robots to take their giant opponents on mano-a-mano, as shown in the latest promotional video released on TOHO Animation's official channel.

But can humanity's own brand of monstrous counterattack be of any use when Godzilla begins firing its infamous blue laser beams?

The upcoming kaiju anime feature film is directed by Kobun Shizuno of "Knights of Sidonia" fame, and CG director Hiroyuki Seshita, who previously worked on "Blame! Movie." The screenplay is written by Gen Urobuchi, who also previously wrote for the Japanese anime series, "Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet."

"Godzilla: Monster Planet" premieres on Friday, Nov. 17 in various theaters across Japan, and will also be available on the streaming site Netflix at a later date.

Godzilla first hit theaters in 1954, and has since become a colossal cultural icon. In 2016, director Hideaki Anno reinvigorated the franchise with the kaiju's 31st film, "Shin Godzilla."
