Half-Life 3 Release Date Unknown, Game Potentially in Development

Half-Life is a series of first-person shooting games created by Valve. The franchise is comprised of two main titles, Half-Life, and Half-Life 2 with three shorter episodic titles. Two of these shorter titles have already been released and a third originally slated for a 2007 Christmas release but now has no public release date.

Gabe Newell, Valve's co-founder, has been doing interviews regarding the title as far back as 2010 where he is noted to have spoken about "broadening the emotional palette" of the series and how the next Half-Life game would return to "genuinely scaring the player."

However, it has been since then that there have been delays in production which employees have been refusing to comment on, especially about the game's release. As a result of the unexplained delays and the employees' silence on the matter, Half-Life 3 has become an infamous case of "vaporware" in the video game industry.

Essentially, vaporware is a product which is announced by a company to the general public but is never actually developed nor is it cancelled. Vaporware is usually announced months or even years before its supposed release with lack of actual development details.

Still, fans are hopeful that the Half-Life story would draw to a close especially after the cliffhanger ending of Half-Life 2: Episode 2. Ever since its announcement, there have always been rumors and speculations about the purported release date of the game.

This has even given rise to a meme where users on the Internet would propose a ludicrous theory leading to the number three and then end the statement with "Half-Life 3 confirmed."

While the possibility of the game being in development still remains, there is no actual proof as of late regarding development. The closest fans have gotten would be a statement from former Valve employee Minh Le from months back.

Apparently, Le has reported that he has seen some concept art of the next Half-Life game as well as progress for Left 4 Dead 3. He also confirmed that Half-Life 3 was currently in production but there was no substantial proof of his claims.

The development and release date of the game is still shrouded in mystery.
