'House of Cards' Season 6 News: Production for Series Shut Down Amid Kevin Spacey Allegations
Filming for the sixth and final season of "House of Cards" has been indefinitely suspended.
News of the shutdown was announced to the cast and crew on Tuesday, according to reports. The move was confirmed by Media Rights Capital and Netflix, which both serve as the show's producers, in a statement.
"MRC and Netflix have decided to suspend production on 'House of Cards' season six, until further notice, to give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew," reads the press release.
The producers' decision comes after Netflix confirmed that "House of Cards" will conclude with its upcoming sixth installment after allegations of sexual misconduct by lead star Kevin Spacey against Anthony Rapp had surfaced.
On Monday, actor Anthony Rapp revealed during an interview with BuzzFeed News that he had a traumatic encounter with Spacey in 1986. Rapp, who was 14 years old at the time, said Spacey made a sexual advance toward him.
Spacey immediately issued a response to Rapp's claims and said he has no recollection of the incident. However, he did apologize for what he described as "inappropriate drunken behavior."
The veteran actor wrote, "But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years."
In the same note, Spacey mentioned that he has chosen to live his life "as a gay man." The Verge notes that his attempt to shift the attention from Rapp's accusations has been met with backlash on social media.
Many people expressed their anger over the fact that Spacey used his coming-out as a public relations move to take the attention away from the controversy. Additionally, several have pointed out that his announcement only reinforces the old stereotypes that connect homosexuality with pedophilia.
