Hurricane Maria Wreaks Havoc in Dominica; Puerto Rico Next on Its Devastating Path

Hurricane Maria is considered to be the strongest storm to ever make landfall in Dominica, and now, it is ravaging the small Carribean island with Puerto Rico next on its path.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Maria had record breaking winds reaching up to 160 miles per hour when it made landfall on Dominica making it a Category 5 storm. A following update had also revealed that "significant structural damages" had occurred in the small island nation.

One of these structural damages occurred in the household of Dominica's prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, who shared via social media that his own roof had been blown off by Hurricane Maria. "My roof is gone. I am at the complete mercy of the hurricane. House is flooding," the Dominica prime minister said. Now, one can only imagine the destruction brought upon by the storm to common citizens.

As of now, Hurricane Maria has receded to a category 4 storm, but there are indications that it may become even stronger when it makes landfall in Puerto Rico. With this being said, a hurricane warning has already been issued for the US territory. In fact, Ricardo Rossello, the governor of Puerto Rico, has already declared a state of emergency. Furthermore, President Donald Trump has also issued an emergency declaration for the US territory.

Hurricane warnings had also been set for Guadeloupe, St. Kitts, Montserrat, Nevis, Culebra, Vieques and the US and British Virgin Islands. Most of these Carribean islands are still recovering from the devastation brought upon by Hurricane Irma a few weeks ago.

Puerto Rico played a major role as a conduit for relief services to islands affected by Hurricane Irma, and thankfully, it managed to evade the worst of that storm. However, it is Puerto Rico's turn to brace for a devastating calamity and would need all the support it can get after Hurricane Maria makes its landfall later this Tuesday.
