Idris Elba on James Bond Role: 'Would Be Lovely' But 'It's a Rumor'

Actor Idris Elba is flattered so many people are interested in him becoming the new face for a "James Bond" movie, but he has little hope that it will actually happen.

Rumors have abounded for over two years that Elba is a possible candidate for the next James Bond film. The problem is that the creators of the series have not alluded to any plans about making a new film. Despite that, fans have been incessant that Elba should fill the part. But much as Elba himself would enjoy that, he doesn't seem to believe that it will ever really happen.

"It's not something that I actually hope to come to fruition. It would be lovely if it did, but it's a rumor," he said during an interview with the Digital Spy.

Two years ago, Elba was a little more eager about playing the part.

"If Sony decided to call me and said hey, we wanted to do [James Bond], I'd definitely consider it," he told MSN.

"I'd not only get in the cab [they sent], but I'd take the taxi driver out of the car, hostage," he joked. "[I'd] jump out while it was moving, jump onto a pedal bike that was just past the door as I got on it, and then get onto a plane - on the wing – and land on top of Sony Studios, slide through the air conditioning, and land in the office."

Now with a couple more years of celebrity under his belt and the release of his most recent film "Pacific Rim," Elba suggested that he would just take the suggestion for him to play Bond as flattery.

"It's actually like the will of a nation type-thing. I'm not a champion of myself to be James Bond, but there are so many people who say, 'Hey, you'd be a great one. We'd love to see that.' That's a great feeling for me. That's such a national treasure for us in England, we love James Bond. To be considered as one of those actors who could play him is great," he told the Digital.
