iPhone 8 Durability News: Glass-Back Not as Durable as Expected
Apple's latest iPhone 8 glass cover is supposedly durable. However, when a series of tests were performed, it suggested otherwise.
"The all-glass front and back feature the most durable glass ever in a smartphone in silver or space gray, while a highly polished, surgical-grade stainless steel band seamlessly wraps around and reinforces iPhone X," Apple claims.
However, according to MacRumors, a series of drop tests performed by Square Trade, an extended warranty service provider based in San Francisco, reveal quite a different truth.

The series of tests revealed that the iPhone 8 models will shatter on all sides when dropped at a distance of six feet. Both iPhone 8 models and Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 were tested using the same process and found the Samsung smartphone to be less durable than the Apple models.
Square Trade gave the iPhone 8 a breakability score of 67, and 74 for the iPhone 8 Plus while Galaxy Note 8 landed with an 80. The Galaxy Note received a "high risk" score because it was not functional after a few tests unlike the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.
The Guardian suggests that the glass back of iPhone 8 is very difficult to repair once damaged. In addition, it won't come cheap. After the series of tests which proved that iPhone 8 glass-back is not really as durable as it should be. The new smartphone requires a better jacket to protect its glass cover completely. However, if the jacket is too thick, wireless charging might not work. Apple must have been confused between two priorities: durability and innovation.
Some reports suggest that the glass-back of the latest iPhone 8 might be impossible to be replaced if broken since it is glued to the metal sheet. However, Apple has extended their warranty plan costing around $173 which covers accidental damage incidents for two years.
