Is Disney Finally Making an 'X-Men'–'Avengers' Crossover Movie?

Now that Disney is already in control of 20th Century Fox's major film and television assets, rumors are swirling around that fans might finally see an "X-Men"-"Avengers" crossover movie soon. With Disney already on its way to becoming a media monopoly, the idea seems pretty much within reach.

The entertainment industry recently had a major shakeup when Disney officially announced on Thursday its acquisition of 21st Century Fox's film and television assets. Since the $52.4-billion merger is a huge deal, many wonder what repercussions it will have throughout the media. Disney's acquisition of Fox's assets means it has added a lot of major franchises to its library, including the rights to the "X-Men" franchise.

Since the "X-Men" franchise had been owned by 20th Century Fox for ages, fans have never seen mutants ever appear in any of the franchises owned by Disney, particularly Disney-owned Marvel Studios movies. However, Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox's assets means the "X-Men" franchise belongs to it now, and the legal issues that used to keep the mutants from appearing in Marvel films have now been solved.

Shortly after the acquisition, Disney said in a statement that the deal "provides Disney with the opportunity to reunite with 'X-Men,' 'Fantastic Four' and 'Deadpool' with the Marvel family under one roof and create richer, more complex worlds of inter-related characters and stories that audiences have shown they love."

With the recent multi-billion deal, it looks like it'll only be a matter of time before fans finally see the "X-Men" characters unite with the Avengers in a film. It remains to be seen though if Disney will keep the "X-Men" fans have known for more than two decades now, or will start from scratch and come up with an entirely new X-Men narrative with fresh characters.

Aside from "X-Men," Disney also now owns the "Star Wars" franchise and "Avatar" franchise.
