Is It Wrong to Question God?
There are things that happen in life so unpleasant that drives people to ask God what He was doing when those awful things took place and why He allowed such events to transpire. Christians are also guilty of doing this, prompting them to ask if questioning God is sinful.
Believers can take consolation in the fact that men of God in the Bible have also done the same, but in the right manner. Such questioning of God occurred during times of anguish and despair; meaning, the reproach was actually a cry to God to deliver them from their pain.
A good example is Habakkuk who asked God: "Are you not from everlasting?" (Habakkuk 1:12). Someone who reads this single phrase may conclude that he was questioning God's nature as an eternal being. But the prophet followed this up by addressing Him as: "O Lord, my God, my Holy One."
The statement was actually borne by frustration toward the unfortunate events going on during Habakkuk's time. There were also persecuted people of God who cried out to Him as if questioning His inaction to their plight (Psalm 35:17; 94:13). The point is that the element of worship remains even in their complaint.
So, questioning God per se is not sinful as long as you humble yourself and continue to worship Him. You are just being honest in expressing your impatience because nothing can be hidden from Him (1 Kings 8:39). Just keep in mind your limitations being His creation.
There is another kind of complaint with rebellious intent, making it sinful. Those who question God in this manner do so mockingly and tend to forget their place. The apostle Paul rebukes this kind of people by saying: "But who are you, O man, to answer back to God?" (Romans 9:20).
