Is Snapchat Shutting Down Soon?
Recently, there have been reports claiming that popular messaging site Snapchat will shut down by the end of the year, upsetting the active users of the app. On Nov. 7, Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel confirmed the reports are not true.
Earlier this month, a news article claiming that Snapchat will close down soon spread like wildfire across the web. Although the story was brief and seemed to have been written in a particularly non-journalistic style of writing, many believed that it was true.
According to the said report, Spiegel of the popular app Snapchat had released a statement confirming that the app would be removed from all app stores starting Nov. 14. The report also claimed that the CEO had decided to close down the app due to copyright and legal issues with other popular apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Musical.ly.
"By the date November 14, 2017, all Snapchat apps will be removed from all devices and all app stores. All data and media associated with the app will also be deleted within the app," the report read.
It turned out, however, that source of the viral news article is a prank news site. According to reports, those who have shared the article on social media failed to notice that the top left-hand corner of the article actually contains the words "You Got Owned!," while the right-hand corner of the article contains the words "You've Been Pranked!"
The original source of the news article, Channel45News.com, is reportedly a prank news generator that is responsible for coming up with seemingly credible news stories meant to entice and fool their readers.
Since the fake news broke, Snapchat users have been flooding Spiegel's Twitter page with questions confirming the veracity of the report. On Nov. 7, the CEO responded to a tweet and confirmed it was fake news.
