Jewel, Ty Murray Divorcing After 16 Years: 'We Can Find Happiness Apart Easier Than Together'
After 16 years of marriage, singer Jewel and rodeo star Ty Murray have announced that they are separating. The couple still plans to co-parent son Kase, who turns 3 next week.
"My husband, friend, and partner of 16 years and I have decided to get a divorce," Jewel posted on her personal blog. "Ty and I have always tried to live the most authentic life possible, and we wanted our separation as husband and wife to be nothing less loving than the way we came together."
The two dated for 10 years before finally marrying in a private ceremony in the Bahamas in 2008. But, as Jewel explained, the couple had been having some troubles in the recent past that led them to decide to part.
"For some time we have been engaged in private and difficult, but thoughtful and tender undoing of ourselves. Allowing ourselves the time and space to redefine what we are to each other with love rather than with malice," the singer wrote. "We truly believe we can find greater happiness apart than together, and this is why we are taking the enormous and heartbreaking step of divorce."
Her words are reminiscent of those spoken by Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin as they engaged in "conscious uncoupling." And the couple is standing by one another for their son's sake. Kase Townes turns 3 next week, and they are trying to raise him together in as normal a situation as possible.
"Our dedication to our son is unwavering and we are both committed to being the best partners in raising our son," they wrote and posted on Murray's website. "Due to the spirit in which we have gone about this separation, we trust we can remain dear friends who hold each other in high esteem, which is so important to us as parents – we wish only what is best for our son."
