Jinger Duggar Breaks Family Rule, Wears Shorts

Being devout Baptists, the Duggar family has been known for living an ultra-conservative lifestyle that is reflected in their apparel, choice of music and entertainment, and by the way they raise all their 20 kids. Strict is an understatement to describe the prohibitions imposed on the children, especially on the adolescents' social interaction, which could take effect well into their 20s or until they get married.

Thanks to their reality shows, their quirky way of life has attracted for them a huge following from well-meaning fans, who agree with their Biblical interpretation of holiness, to skeptics who are waiting for the slightest misstep and violation of the rules imposed by the Duggar parents.

So it didn't come as a surprise that the internet went crazy when a photo of 23-year-old Jinger wearing shorts appeared online. It's not even "short shorts" but knee-length casual shorts, which is the most common thing to see. Never mind that the sixth of the Duggar brood is already married and free to live her life, we're talking about the daughter of Michelle Duggar here.

The family matriarch is proud of rearing her six daughters into wearing only dresses and skirts. "My daughters are the second generation of modest dressing in this family," Michelle proudly posted in her TLC blog. "They've grown up being dressed modestly and in clothes that are definitely more feminine apparel."

Michelle's definition of modest dressing is covering the necks down to the knees. "By keeping those private areas covered, there's not any 'defrauding' going on," she added. "My kids have all been taught that the definition of defrauding as stirring up desires that cannot be righteously fulfilled. We don't believe in defrauding others by the way we dress."

Some netizens interpret Jinger's stepping out from this constricting norm as an act of rebellion and a betrayal of her mother — and they love it! A Facebook page called "Free Ginger" was made especially for that purpose. One fan commented: "It's always nice to see a Duggar kid give the finger to their parents' crazy restrictive rules."
