Kesha on Eating Disorder: 'I Was Hateful to Myself'

Singer-performer Kesha has been through a lot in the past year, including a stint in rehab that ended in March. She opened up in a new essay about the eating disorder that landed her in treatment and said at the time that she "really needed support" from those around her but was not receiving it.

"Sure, I've written songs about partying, but my dirty little secret is that I'm actually incredibly responsible. I take my music and career very seriously, and certainly didn't land in this situation from partying. But I was cut off from the outside world and I imagined people making up stories at a time when what I really needed was support," Kesha wrote for Elle U.K.

Kesha has seemingly changed the direction her career was headed and has made other noticeable changes. She dropped the dollar sign from her name and now is a judge on "Rising Star." She spent at least one month in treatment and made her red-carpet debut at the Humane Society of the United States' 60th Anniversary Gala instead of another venue.

"I felt like a liar, telling people to love themselves as they are, while I was being hateful to myself and really hurting my body. I wanted to control things that weren't in my power, but I was controlling the wrong things," Kesha added. "I convinced myself that being sick, being skinny was part of my job. It felt safer somehow."

Now she hopes that she can set a good example for others who might be struggling with their health. It's taken some time, but finally the singer is comfortable enough in her own skin to accept the fact that there will always be paparazzi surrounding her and publishing their photos.

"I knew I was ready to leave (rehab) when I'd gained enough confidence to get on a plane knowing there would be paparazzi at the airport at the other end. I was right – they were there. But this time, when I saw the pictures, I felt OK," she concluded.
