Keyshawn Johnson Arrested in Alleged Domestic Dispute: 'I Did Not Hit Jennifer,' Says Former NFLer
Keyshawn Johnson was arrested for a domestic dispute Monday with his ex-girlfriend Jennifer Conrad, but the former successful NFL wide receiver for the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys said he never laid a hand on her. Johnson is currently a commentator for ESPN, and it's unknown if the incident will affect his employment.
Keyshawn Johnson's arrest came at his Calabasas, Calif. home at around 12:48 a.m. Monday when the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department responded to a call "regarding possible spousal assault," a statement read.
"Deputies arrived, it was determined that the resident and his ex-girlfriend were involved in a domestic dispute," the police report said. After investigating, the incident ended "in the arrest of the resident for misdemeanor domestic battery."
Though the police report and statement was rather vague on the details, TMZ reported that the domestic dispute was over marriage. Johnson alleged grabbed her cell phone, "causing a gash to her hand," a smashed it to pieces.
Johnson made a statement to clarify some of what happened during the incident, calling it a "crazy day."
"I would like to apologize to my family, friends, fan, colleagues and, of course, to Jennifer for what happened last night at my home in Calabasas. Though the true facts will come out as part of the legal process, I can say now, without hesitation, that I did not hit, grab or strike Jennifer, nor would I ever touch her or any woman in anger," he wrote.
"I am cooperating with the authorities and I will continue to do so to ensure that this personal matter is fairly and expediently resolved," Johnson added.
Johnson was arrested and jailed but posted bail at 9:15 a.m. Monday.
The 41-year-old former NFL star is currently employed by ESPN's pregame show on Sunday, and the network said they "are aware and are looking into it."
