'Kimi No Na Wa' Remake News: Producers Excited to Collaborate with Hollywood, Fans Are Not
The producers of the original "Kimi No Na Wa" are excited to collaborate with Hollywood names to create a Western live-adaptation of the anime film. Meanwhile, fans of the franchise are not too excited about the upcoming remake.
Toho Co., Ltd., the producers of the original "Kimi No Na Wa" — "Your Name" in the English translation — are eager to work on a live-action remake of the Japanese animated movie with Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot, who won the rights to the film, Variety reports.
Yoshishige Shimatani, chief executive officer of Toho, shared his sentiments about the upcoming project.
"We are excited to collaborate with an extremely talented team in Hollywood and to create with them a live-action version of the iconic Japanese film 'Your Name,'" said Shimatani.
Genki Kawamura, the producer of the original anime film, will collaborate with JJ Abrams and Lindsey Weber from Bad Robot. Meanwhile, Academy Award-winner Eric Heisser will compose the screenplay for the remake.
Abrams' involvement in the live-action remake of "Your Name" makes the film highly anticipated because of his work in the franchises of "Star Wars," "Star Trek," and "Mission: Impossible."
However, fans of "Kimi No Na Wa" don't appear too excited about the live-action remake.
Fans took to Twitter to express how they would rather not have a "real-life adaptation" of the hit Japanese anime movie.
One fan also pointed out that the anime won't work as a live-action remake because "its charm is the photo-realistic animation," Twitter user @TheGespenst said.
"Kimi No Na Wa," — created, written, and directed by Makoto Shinkai — follows the journey of two teenagers from different social backgrounds who later learn that they have the ability to exchange bodies. From there, the two will find a way to travel through space and time to prevent a big misfortune from happening.
Toho will be in charge of distributing the live-action remake of "Kimi No Na Wa" in Japan.
