Xfinity Series Race 2015 News: Kyle Busch Suffers Compound Leg Fracture in Race at Daytona
Kyle Busch fractured his leg and will be out for an unspecified amount of time.
Kyle will not get to run his #18 Toyota sponsored by M&M's for the foreseeable future. How long that winds up being is still to be determined, but after suffering a serious leg injury in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race Saturday, Busch's cup team will have to move along without him.
Under NASCAR rules drivers have to declare what national series they can run for a points championship in. They are only allowed one and Kyle of course picked the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. He can run in Xfinity series races if he has a car that can make the field. However, he may not collect point just purse money and wins.
Kyle has the record for the most Xfinity series wins at 70. There is little reason for Kyle to run in what is little more than a Sprint Cup development series. One could argue money but first place in the Xfinity series race pays about half what it does to finish last in the Daytona 500.
Further complicating this situation is NASCAR Chase eligibility rules. NASCAR may give Kyle a medical waiver but as it stands right now, under the rules, Kyle would be ineligible for the Chase, leaving his sponsor out of the biggest 10-week event in American motorsports.
NASCAR is a little different than other sports. In NASCAR having the Cup stars race in the other national series helps bring attention to those series and aids in the young driver development there.
