LG G5 Rumors, Specs, Release Date: Upcoming Flagship to Skip Fingerprint Sensor and Get Iris Scanner Instead
LG has just recently announced its newest flagship, the G4, but as early as now, there are already reports of an upcoming flagship.
Based on previous reports and rumors, the Korean manufacturer will be launching not one, but two flagship level smartphones this year. This move is probably an answer to the trend of dual high-end devices getting released. Some examples include the Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro and Mi Note, and the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.
However, LG will reportedly launch a bigger smartphone that would replace the G Pro lineup which was discontinued this year. However, its main highlight would be an iris scanner.
According to the report by GSM Arena, LG could be skipping the fingerprint scanning technology, and move forward to iris-scanning tech instead. Based on the report, LG is so serious with this endeavor that it has teamed up with biometrics specialist Irience just to perfect the technology.
In case LG succeeds in including an iris scanner in its upcoming device, probably the G5, it will only be the second manufacturer to get the technology. The X5Pro from Vivo already offers the technology, although the smartphone is currently available only in China.
LG reportedly wants to increase the scanning range of the sensor from 30cm to 50cm, which is considered arms-length.
