What to Expect in The New Season of 'Making a Murderer'

Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, "Making a Murderer" executive producers and directors, said in a press release to the Rolling Stone that the new season will give fans an in-depth look to the lives of Avery and Dassey as they tried to challenge their convictions. They also teased that the incoming season will give viewers an "intimate access to the families and characters close to the case."

The duo also revealed that the next season will show how Kathleen Zellner, Avery's new lawyer, worked to find means to challenge her client's conviction. They also added that Dassey's legal team also granted them an exclusive access to the actions that the team took to appeal for their client's case. Aside from showing the high-stakes post-conviction process, the filmmakers also promised to show the emotional toll of the conviction.

Ricciardi and Demos disclosed that they already started the production of the new season. However, they refused to give the targeted release date, as well as, the number of episodes they are going to produce.

The Success of 'Making a Murderer'

Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary Programming, told Variety that "Making a Murderer" captivated viewers across the globe because of Ricciardi's and Demos' incredible vision, commitment and keen eye of documenting the personal stories of Avery and Dassey. She added that Netflix is thrilled to give more updates to the true-crime stories.

"Making a Murderer" kicked off on Netflix on December 18, 2015. According to The Verge, the docuseries turned controversial after it portrayed the Manitowoc County police as inept and manipulative during the investigation process. It also ignited the petition urging the White House to pardon Avery.

Last week, "Making a Murderer" received an Emmy nomination for outstanding documentary or nonfiction series. It was also nominated for outstanding directing, outstanding writing, outstanding picture editing, outstanding sound editing and outstanding sound mixing for a nonfiction program.
