Man Shoots Pit Bull Attacking Him And His Labrador

Logan Police are currently investigating an incident involving a man who fired a gun at a park to shoot a pit bull that was attacking his Labrador.

According to authorities who responded to the scene at Ray Hugie Hydro Park, U.S. 89 and Canyon Road after 3 p.m. on Saturday, the man who shot one of the two pit bulls carries a concealed weapons permit.

Capt. Tyson Budge of the Logan Police Department said that the gunman and his Labrador had been playing off-leash at the park prior to meeting the owner of the two pit bulls. While he went to his truck to retrieve his dog's leash, the pit bulls, who were both on leashes, became aggressive and they started to go after the Labrador.

Both of the dogs overpowered their owner and they rushed towards the gunman's dog. Police cannot determine what instigated the fight.

The gunman initially fired warning shots but the pair of pit bulls were undeterred by the sound of gunfire. When the dogs continued to attack and reportedly tried to bite him, the Labrador owner shot one of the two.

Budge said that one of the rounds fired hit the pit bull in the shoulder while another went through the neck. Shortly after, its owner rushed his dog to the veterinarian.

Authorities say that the pit bull is expected to recover from the incident. "It sounds like the animal is going to be OK," Budge said.

The gunman is cooperating with the police for the investigation. As of now, Budge said, it is unclear if criminal charges will be filed. He emphasized that the park does require dogs to be leashed. On the other hand, the Labrador was not the aggressor, so the judge might be a little considerate because of that.
