Manny Pacquiao News: Heavyweight Champion Wants Pacquiao To Have Mayweather Rematch
World Boxing Council's (WBC) undefeated heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder recently expressed his interest in seeing a rematch between welterweight legends Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
Mayweather and Pacquiao finally fought each other on May 2 of the past year, after five years of failed negotiations and performance-enhancing drug use allegations that eventually led to lawsuits being filed.
Both men were already in their late 30's when they faced each other, which led to the disappointment of the great majority of fans who saw the fight. And as many had expected, Mayweather emerged victorious via a wide unanimous decision margin, officially ending the open-ended debate of who the "Greatest Fighter of this Era" really is.
The fight, however, is recorded to be the most lucrative one in boxing history, garnering 4.4 million pay-per-view buys, while earning a total $400 million in TV revenue.
In a report by Ronnie Nathanielsz for Boxingscene, Wilder says he would want to see Mayweather and Pacquiao go at it for the second time, noting that he believes "Money May" would be back for one more time to surpass Rocky Marciano's record of 49-0.
Mayweather holds the same win-loss slate, with 26 victories by knockout.
"If Floyd wins then he can successfully retire and making history as well by defeating Manny," Wilder said, according to the Boxingscene report. "If Manny wins, he can also retire whether he wins, loses, or draws."
Wilder also went on to laud Pacquiao for his accomplishments, particularly how he went from being an unknown boxer in the United States to becoming one of the elite fighters in history.
Yet, despite the slight clamor for a rematch between the two, it looks more to be a distant possibility as of the moment.
Mayweather had already announced and reiterated his retirement after facing and handily defeating former world champion Andre Berto in September. Pacquiao, on the other hand, also reaffirmed his upcoming retirement which is to take effect after his rubber match against Timothy Bradley on April 9 in Las Vegas.
