McLaren 720S Release Date, Specs: Super Series' Twin-Turbo V8 Engine Can Reach Quarter Mile in 10.3 Seconds
More details regarding McLaren's second-generation Super Series sports car, rumored to be called the 720S, have been revealed ahead of its official debut at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show next month.
The British automaker recently announced that the McLaren 650S' replacement will be powered by a new 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that delivers stunning performance.
"The new 4.0-liter M840T is an outstanding engine powering an exceptional supercar capable of covering a standing quarter mile in 10.3 seconds. Power, torque and throttle response are all significantly enhanced compared to the first-generation Super Series, yet with fuel efficiency and emissions also notably improved," said Haydn Baker, McLaren Super Series vehicle line director.
The McLaren 720S is also able to go from standstill to 124 miles per hour (mph) in just 7.8 seconds.
To match the extreme performance provided by the new powertrain, the upcoming sports car will also have a new exhaust system that delivers a clean, crisp and soulful exhaust note. However, for those who still want more, an optional sports exhaust is also available.
McLaren also revealed that the second-generation supercar will have a cast-aluminum air intake plenum, the McLaren Speedmark logo on top of the V8 powertrain and engine bay illumination that is activated when the vehicle is unlocked.
In last month's teaser, the luxury sports car manufacturer revealed that the McLaren 720S' beautiful and sculpted body will be equipped with impressive aerodynamic technologies to enhance its performance. Downforce has been increased with the second-generation Super Series attaining twice the aerodynamic efficiency of the McLaren 650S. Cooling has also been improved by 15 percent. This is attained by making sure that there is airflow coursing through the high-temperature radiators via the supercar's new dihedral door design.
The McLaren 720S will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on March 7. For those who can't wait for three more weeks, car enthusiasts can gain a sneak peek as the forthcoming Super Series sports car has already been spotted in spy shots.
