Melissa Joan Hart: Former 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' Actress Slammed for Insensitive Hurricane Maria Post
While Puerto Rico was being battered by Hurricane Maria, Melissa Joan Hart lamented that the so-called Hurricane of the Century ruined her planned family vacation.
As of this writing, reports claim that Hurricane Maria has left more than 3.4 million Puerto Ricans without electricity and threatens the territory with flooding as its remnants continue to dump heavy amounts of rain. With Puerto Rico's energy grid fully destroyed, it is predicted that the process of recovery for the territory will take a long and tedious process.
While the hurricane is the strongest that Puerto Rico experienced in almost a century, Hart, who was best known for playing the titular role in the popular '90s series "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," posted on her social media account that the hurricane ruined her family vacation.
"And just like that, our family vacation is canceled. Such a bummer but we plan to hit the @nickresortpuntacana resort another time this year," Hart said as a caption to a screenshot of a weather report indicating that Hurricane Maria had made landfall on the Caribbean island of the Dominica.
For many people, Hart's post was insensitive as, while people in the path of the hurricane were fearing for their lives, the actress' concern was simply about the cancellation of her family trip. While some of Hart's follower couldn't help but feel sorry for her, many were not able to stop themselves from slamming the actress for what seemed to be a selfish and superficial complaint.
"I think you should be more concerned with the people that live there instead of your meaningless vacation," one said on Twitter.
While the said post has already been taken down, Hart has posted several messages of support to all those affected by Hurricane Maria as well as to the victims of 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Central Mexico last Sept. 20.
