Mercedes-AMG GT4 Concept Release Date, Specs News: Four-Door Sedan to Break Cover at Geneva

Mercedes-AMG is expected to kick-off the celebration of its 50th anniversary at the Geneva Motor Show this March. Apart from the highly anticipated Project One hypercar, the high-performance division of Mercedes-Benz is also reportedly unveiling a four-door sedan concept called the GT4.

According to AutoCar, the concept will preview an upcoming production car codenamed X290. It is slated to arrive in 2018 as a replacement for the CLS Shooting Brake.

The Mercedes-AMG GT4 concept is said to be powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that will deliver up to 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. The newest iteration of AMG's engine will reportedly deliver improved induction qualities compared to previous versions of the powertrain. There will be two versions in terms of power output and both will be available in 4Matic+ and S 4Matic+ models.

The powertrain will be mated to the latest version of AMG's SpeedShift Multi Clutch Technology (MCT) seven-speed automatic transmission and the concept sedan will be equipped with the 4Matic four-wheel drive system. The vehicle will also have a bespoke suspension.

The GT4 concept will be built using Mercedes-Benz's modular rear architecture (MRA) platform and will utilize aluminum and high-strength steel components. This translates to a lightweight vehicle with enhanced performance.

Furthermore, the GT4 concept will reportedly feature a new integrated starter generator (ISG). An additional electric motor with a 48-volt electrical system will improve acceleration from start-up and will deliver 20 more horsepower for short periods of time.

Later on, AMG will also release a tamer version of the GT4. It will be powered by a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine and will also have the same ISG setup.

The Mercedes-AMG GT4 concept will most likely be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, to take place from March 9 to 19. Following the release of the production car next year, the GT4 is expected to compete with the Porsche Panamera, BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe and the Audi RS7.
