Michael Schumacher Health News Update 2017: F1 Legend to Receive Treatment in U.S.
F1 legend Michael Schumacher will reportedly be flown to the U.S. for special medical treatment for a brain injury following a tragic ski accident in 2013.
Rumor has it the Schumachers are planning to transport the 48-year-old from their home in Switzerland, where he has been recuperating since, to a brain trauma center in Texas, U.S.
A Swedish publication alleged that it was the racer's wife, Corina, who decided to seek new treatment.
The F1 racer is expected to be under the care of brain injury specialist Dr. Mark Meeks.
"We have extensive experience with trauma patients. There is probably no clinic in Europe that handles as many cases as we do," said Meeks to Expressen.
Schumacher's medical condition is a well-guarded secret. Since the seven-time champion started recuperating from the crash, his family imposed a strict media blackout on the racer's health. All kinds of rumors, however, have persisted amidst the family's silence.
Last year, the family was forced to deny rumors alleging that the F1 racer has been able to walk through the aid of physical therapy. Hence, reports should be taken with a grain of salt.
Apparently one of Schumacher's supposed friends took secret snaps of him in his home in Geneva. The unknown individual attempted to sell the snaps to the press for "high amounts of money," as stated by the prosecutor's office in Offenburg.
Schumacher got into an accident in 2013 while skiing in the French Alps where he smashed his head on a rock. He regained consciousness in June of the following year after he was placed in a medically induced coma.
In 2014, his family decided to move him to their estate in Lake Geneva, where he has been receiving round-the-clock care since.
Schumacher won seven championships in F1, five with Ferrari and two with Benetton, making him the most successful driver in the category.
