Moto E5 Specs, Release Date: Leak Reveals Rear Fingerprint Sensor With a Twist, but Outdated Design

The fifth-generation Moto E device is not that far away. In fact, users are treated their first look at the handset.

Dubbed as the Moto E5, the handset appears in an image provided by My Smart Price. It does not look like it is hopping onto the bezel-less train though.

The Moto E5 will feature a fingerprint scanner on the back, embedded just below the Motorola logo that is sitting below the rear-facing camera as shown in the leaked render.

While this should have allowed Motorola to chop off the bezels (manufacturers usually move the biometric sensor to the back to shed off a bit of the front bezels), the handset still remains chunky.

The stocky bottom portion, which is where the home button is placed on its predecessor, simply features the logo. Android Central feels that it should have been trimmed for a more updated look because even though it is not a flagship, it still feels like poor use of space.

The Moto E5 will get a single camera on the back — the same for the front. Both will have LED flash though, much like the modules found on its predecessor.

Apart from the very thick bezels, the handset is not upgrading to USB Type C yet as the render shows what appears to be a microUSB port.

Overall, the Moto E5 looks a lot like the previous version save for the new fingerprint sensor placement. While it is no flagship, there are midrangers that feature a more modern look.

The design choices of Motorola on this one might affect how this phone does in a market where users want thinner bezels even for mid-tier and lower-specced mobile offerings.

The Moto E5 is expected to be unveiled on April 3 since it is the date displayed on the screen of the image in the render. This is likely since Moto E-series handsets usually hit the shelves around that time.
