'Castlevania' Season 2 Release Date, Plot News: Netflix Show Based on 'Dracula's Curse' Installment; Season 2 Confirmed for 2018

The 1986 video game series "Castlevania" will be getting a Netflix animated series adaptation this year. Most of the details are still being kept under wraps, except for the fact that the show is going to be produced by Adi Shankar (Power Rangers 2015 Short Film) and comic book author Warren Ellis, along with Kevin Kolde and Fred Seibert (Adventure Time).

Netflix listed "Castlevania" Season 1 with a 2017 launch date with a short description saying, "Inspired by the classic video game series, 'Castlevania' is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself."

Shankar also announced through a Facebook post that "Castlevania" Season 2 will likewise launch by 2018 and that he guarantees that the show will "be the western world's first good video game adaptation."

In addition, Shankar confirms that season 2 is still written by Ellis. He also added that the series will be largely based on the "Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse" video game.

The producer also revealed through Collider that the show will have a "Game of Thrones" vibe and is "super R-rated."

Co-producer Seibert already hinted about the project during last year's Nick Animation podcast, saying that he was at work on something "based on one of the most world-famous video games of the last 30 years."

Shankar also hinted at this project earlier on through a 2015 Facebook post saying, "I'm producing a super violent Castlevania mini-series with my homies Fred Seibert and Kevin Klonde," he wrote. "It's going to be dark, satirical, and after a decade of propaganda, it will flip the vampire sub-genre on its head."

"Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse" was developed by Konami and released by Nintendo in 1989. The game is basically a prequel to the "Castlevania" video game series, taking place a few centuries earlier than the first installment.

The game follows Trevor C. Belmont, an ancestor of the original game's main hero Simon Belmont, who is also part of a family of vampire hunters who are out to defeat Count Vlad Dracula.

The latest installment of the game series was released in 2014, titled "Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2."
