San Diego Chargers NFL 2015 News, Rumors: Stadium Update - Chargers Could Move to LA

Three NFL cities and teams still have stadium issues, the Oakland Raiders along with the San Diego Chargers and St. Louis Rams. All of these issues revolve around the situation in Los Angeles, California.

Stan Kroenke, who owns the Rams, wants to build a stadium in LA and get at least one team (but more likely two) NFL teams to move there. He technically needs a two thirds majority approval of his fellow owners to move the Rams back to LA and into his stadium. That approval may be hard to gain if St. Louis comes up with an adequate stadium proposal, which seems like they just may. The NFL will not want to alienate an entire city of NFL fans by once again moving a franchise out of St. Louis.

The situation in Oakland is a little more dire as the Raiders and the Oakland A's have been trying to get new stadiums built for quite some time. The San Francisco Giants effectively blocked a relocation of the A's to San Jose and that leaves both sports franchises in limbo with an aging building that occasionally has severe sewer issues.

Pro Football Talk is reporting that San Diego is forming a committee to explore stadium options with the Chargers. San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said this to Tony Perry of the LA Times, "At no point in San Diego's history has the possibility of the Chargers moving to Los Angeles been more real."

There is going to be a NFL franchise in LA. It is not likely to be an expansion team, and that means there is a lot of pressure on local governments to get stadium deals locked up before teams start relocating.

The NFL and its 32 franchises have done a great job of getting their teams out of the multi use stadiums that dominated the 1970s and '80s. In fact only one team, the Raiders, still shares a stadium with a baseball team. The rest of the NFL franchises all have their home field and all the revenue that comes along with that status, save the New York Jets and New York Giants, who still share a home stadium that has been newly constructed.
