OnePlus 2 for Q2 or Q3 of 2015, OnePlus One Up for Pre-Orders for a Limited Time
Creators of the hard-to-acquire OnePlus One smartphone, Carl and David, recently created an "Ask-Me-Anything" or AMA thread on Reddit to answer questions about their next smartphone, the OnePlus 2.
The OnePlus One had been hard to acquire when it first came out earlier this year due to its demanding invite system. The AMA thread on Reddit though marks the OnePlus One's pre-order availability. It also answered some questions regarding the OnePlus 2.
"OnePlus 2 should be out in Q2 or Q3 of 2015. By that time, I'd think Android L would be standard," Carl wrote. He also mentioned the possibilty of a smaller OnePlus 2 smartphone to meet consumer's demand.
The first smartphone's popularity and notoriety can be attributed to its cheap price for its class and specs. The One has a 1920 x 1080 full HD display, a 13-megapixel camera, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core 2.5GHz processor. It's available for $300 off-contract and to contrast against other competitors, most Android phones of similar specs would go for some $400-$500 off-contract.
There have also been questions during the AMA on whether the One would be available without having to pre-order or being invited. Apparently, it won't happen in 2014. Carl offered an explanation as to why, which he has also mentioned before.
"We understand that our current method may be slowing our growth down, but we'd rather grow slower and in a healthy way than taking too much risk and going out of business. Risk management is extra important in our scenario where we don't have hardware margins," Carl wrote.
One of the reasons why the One is cheaper than the standard Android phone is that it's being sold with virtually no profit margin. If anything, the price at which you buy the OnePlus One is close to the actual price at which it's being built.
