Pencil in Head? 15 Years Before Doctors Find Extraordinary Cause of Man's Headaches, Colds (VIDEO)
A man had a pencil in his head for 15 years, German doctors are reporting this week.
The man, originally from Afghanistan, had suffered from headaches, constant colds, and deteriorating vision in one of his eyes for years. Things had gotten so intolerable for the 24 year old man that he eventually went to Aachen University Hospital to seek treatment.
However, nothing could have prepared him for what doctors found.
After a scan, medics identified that a 4 inch (10 cm) pencil was lodged from his sinus to his pharynx and had injured his right eye socket.
Doctors broke the news to the stunned man, who admitted that he had no idea how it may have got there. The only explanation he could think of is that he remembers falling badly once when he was a young child.
It is now claimed that 15 years ago, as a nine year old, the man fell on a pencil and it lodged itself in his head.
German doctors scheduled the man in to have the pencil removed, and eventually the man was wheeled into surgery where surgeons successfully managed to remove the offensive object.
Officials at the hospital have confirmed that the surgery went well and that the man was now recovering from the operation.
Hospital spokesman Mathias Brandstaedter informed reporters on Wednesday of the extraordinary case for the first time at a medical conference in Germany this week, according to The Associated Press.
