'Person of Interest' Season 6 News, Updates: Producers Shoot Down Possibility of Spinoff Series

CBS' "Person of Interest" concluded its five-season run in June, but fans are still convinced that there's still enough material to do a Season 6. Its final season had ended in a major cliffhanger after killing off one of its major characters, Reese (played by Jim Caviezel) after it successfully took down the Machine. Yet during the final moments of the episode, it had come back to life, taking Sameen Shaw (Sarah Shahi) in the process.

This had led to several fans to believe that the story can possibly still go on. In fact, it had sparked an online petition on Change.org to bring back "Person of Interest," either for a sixth season, a complete reboot, or a spinoff series. As of press time, the petition has garnered more than 50,000 signatories - evidence of the show's strong following.

What the show's producers have to say

However, in an earlier interview with Deadline, showrunners Jonah Nolan and Greg Plageman seem to have shut down any possibility of a spinoff series. The possibility of revisiting the same storyline for any "Person of Interest" revival lends itself to the artificial intelligence envisioned for the show. Unfortunately, that is not the case for the characters, particularly Reese.

They did admit, however, that they once envisioned doing a spinoff on the Control side of things - but that was a great idea had it been done three seasons ago. Now, the producers agreed, doing a "Person of Interest" spinoff could only serve to "impoverish" both the original and the new series.

But fans shouldn't lose hope just yet. The producers hadn't completely closed their doors on a "Person of Interest" revival just yet. They acknowledged the show's strong fan base, a factor that had catapulted the likes of "X-Files" and "The 24" to come back as well.

Strong possibility of a comeback?

It looks like the stars themselves are also on board should "Person of Interest" go this route. In an interview with TV Insider, Sarah Shahi had expressed interest in coming back for her character if given the chance, especially since the series had ended with the Machine reaching out to her as a replacement to Reese.

Should it happen, the "Person of Interest" star envisioned a bionic arm and a shaved head for Shaw, for whom she continues to hold a candle out for. However, she also said it was unlikely that a spinoff could happen, especially as the cast and crew have already moved on to other projects.
