Plane Crash Hits Homes in CT Suburb, 2 Children Feared Dead

A small plane crashed into two homes in East Haven, Conn., and the town's mayor said that two of the three missing persons might be young children.

The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. north of Tweed-New Haven Airport along the the flight path of the approach for the airports runway.

An FAA official told the Associated Press that the multi-engine plane had departed Teterboro, N.J., and crashed while approaching Tweed.

"We do not know the conditions of anyone on board the plane. It's not known if anyone was at home when the plane crashed," the official said.

Two children were thought to be inside one of the two houses struck by the plane, and the pilot has yet to be accounted for.

The plane is "sitting in a lady's bedroom," Dennis Karjanis, a local resident who was in the area when the plane crashed, told WTNH.

"The house is totally demolished," Karjanis said, and the fire was "going like heck." A car was also set on fire from the crash.

East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo stated that the missing people include the one person on the plane and two children in the house, ages 1 and 13.

"We haven't recovered anybody at this point and we presume there is going to be a very bad outcome," East Haven Fire Chief Douglas Jackson said.

Tweed's airport manager, Lori Hoffman-Soares, said the pilot had been in communication with air traffic control did not issue any distress calls.

"All we know is that it missed the approach and continued on. There were no distress calls as far as we know," she said.

Another resident, David Esposito, told WTNH that he heard a woman screaming that her children were inside the burning home, but when he went inside to investigate was forced to turn back because of the growing flames.
