PS4 News and Updates 2016: Leaked Photos Show Slimmer PS4 Console; Design, Features and Price Details

Heads up, gamers: Leaked images of what could be the refresh of PlayStation 4 have surfaced online through a UK online auction site.

In an advertisement posted on Gumtree.com, which had since been taken down, a seller posted images of what is he alleges is the unreleased PS4, which appears to be slimmer and much more rounded as opposed to the original design. The chassis appears to be entirely matte, and looks narrower than the existing PS4.

Moreover, the images showed that the console is packed with a 500GB hard drive and has noticeably removed the optical port. With its svelte looks and seemingly packed capacity, what's actually more surprising is that the seller is asking for a relatively cheap price at $385.

Polygon was able to grab the images before the ad got deleted.

While the legitimacy of the console has yet to be confirmed, another Twitter user, @shortman82, posted a photo of the boxed console of what appears to be the PS4.

Playstation 4 Neo

The leak comes at the heels of recent reports that Sony will be releasing two new Playstation models this September: a refreshed version of the existing PS4 console, and a new configuration of the console, codenamed "Neo," which was confirmed by Sony in June.

Like Microsoft's powerful XBox Scorpio, Neo is intended to complement the standard PS4, with its upgraded graphics, faster processor, and 4K reso support.

It's unclear whether the leaked photos showed the Neo or if the console was merely the refreshed version of the old model. While the Japanese company did not announce that they will be making a slimmer iteration of the console, it makes sense as its Scorpio flagship counterpart is competitively slim.

What to expect from the new consoles

The new PlayStation model will be unveiled in a media event on Sept. 7 in Times Square. According to Sony, all PS4 games will be playable on both the existing PS4 and the Neo.

On the specs front, leaks and rumors are thin to the ground, but TechRadar reports that the new PS4 can run VR with less power than the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets.

The new PS4 console may have amped up its hardware with 8 Jaguar Cores on 2.1 GHz (the original PS4 had 1.6 Ghz). Transfer speed on the 8Gb RAM also went from 176 GB/sec to 218 GB/sec, which means higher resolution, richer gaming textures, and smooth playing experiences.
