Rare Princess Diana Candid Yacht Photo Shows Intimate Side of Late Royal (PHOTO)

A rare, previously unpublished photo of the late Princess Diana aboard designer Valentino's yacht in 1990 has made waves and shows a private side to the late royal. Diana would have been 53 this month had she survived a serious car accident in 1997.

The photograph was published on Instagram by Valentino's partner, Giancarlo Giametti and shows the princess in a bikini, with a shirt knotted above her stomach and wearing a pair of black sunglasses. She appears relaxed while on a trip with her friends. A young boy is with Diana and is assumed to be Prince William, though that has not yet been confirmed.

The photo was taken in 1990, seven years before Diana would be killed in a car accident, ironically after enjoying some time aboard boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed's yacht. Giametti was actually with Diana while they were on the yacht together. It was a tragic twist of fate that took Diana's life.

After having dinner together, Diana and Al Fayed tried to flee from the paparazzi but crashed in the Paris tunnel. Both were killed, though many have wondered whether better medical attention would have saved Diana's life.

"She knew the paparazzi were there, but she didn't care," Giametti told Harpers Baazar about that fateful day when the two had lunch together.

In a rare break from royal tradition, Diana was given a public funeral, complete with a procession. A teenage William and younger brother Harry solemnly walked behind their mother's casket along the route, and it was then that the press agreed to leave the boys alone so that they could get their educations.

Ever since the crash, Harry and William have had tenuous relationships with the press. William, especially, has tried to protect his loved ones, including wife Kate and son George, from being put under intense scrutiny. When revealing photos of Kate were published, the royals took action and actually sued the publication and won, a first for the royal family.
