Rio 2016 Olympics News: Neymar Jr. Leads Brazil's Quest for Elusive Gold Medal in Football; Will Party Boy Lifestyle Hurt Barcelona Star's Performance?
Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr. is set to lead the men's football team of his home country in its quest for the elusive Olympic gold medal. As the Rio 2016 Olympics draws nearer, the FC Barcelona forward has been criticized for his party boy lifestyle that might affect his field performance.
Neymar Won't Stop Partying
Amid criticisms, Neymar defended his party boy lifestyle. "The moment I am off the field it's my personal time," the 24-year-old Brazilian team captain told the press.
Neymar reasoned out that he loves going out and having fun with his friends, and no one could stop him from doing what he wanted. "I am well aware what my duties are the next day. I am going to keep going out and I don't see anything wrong with that," the Barcelona star added.
The Elusive Olympic Gold Medal for the Land of Football
According to Rio2016.com, this will be the second time that Neymar will be leading Brazil's national team in an attempt to win its first Olympic gold medal in football. The Brazilian team started strong during the London 2012 Olympics; however, they only ended with a silver medal after losing to Mexico in the finals.
Aside from getting silver in 2012, Brazil was a runner-up in 1984 and 1988. The national team also won the bronze in 1996 and 2008.
In a report by ESPN FC, Neymar commented that it is ironic that Brazil, which is the "land of football," has never won an Olympic gold medal for the sport. He said that the Rio 2016 Olympics will be a unique opportunity to win the first-ever gold medal as the game will also be held in the country.
"We know how important this medal is," Neymar stated. He added that the whole Brazilian team will do everything to finally get the elusive gold medal.
It can be recalled that Neymar opted out from the Copa America Centenario this year to prioritize his preparations for the Rio 2016 Olympics. He will be leading an 18-man squad that includes popular professional footballers like attacking midfielder Rafinha, defender Marquinhos, attacking midfielder Felipe Anderson, forward Gabriel Barbosa and forward Gabriel Jesus.
Strong Contenders for the Olympic Gold Medal
According to Sports Illustrated, Brazil's quest for the elusive Olympic gold medal in football will not be an easy one. Argentina, Mexico and Germany are among the strong teams that may hinder Brazil from achieving its goals.
The Rio 2016 Olympics final game for men's football is scheduled on Aug. 20 at the Maracana Stadium.
