'Riverdale' Season 2: Creator Teases Big Genre Twist
Since "Riverdale" premiered on The CW, fans have been wondering about the secret behind the murder of Jason Blossom (Trevor Stines). With the first season nearing its end and the second season looming, a prevailing theory has emerged that the show may be headed toward a post-apocalyptic direction based on the "Archie" comics zombie spin-off "Afterlife with Archie."
In the 2013 comics, Jughead asks Sabrina Spellman, a teenage witch, to bring his dog back to life after it gets hit by a car. However, she accidentally transforms Hot Dog into a zombie and ends up biting Jughead, triggering a zombie plague.
In "Riverdale," fans theorize that Jason actually turned into a zombie when he traveled to Greendale — Sabrina's hometown — before he was found later on with a gunshot wound to his head. Another clue fans are basing this theory on is Cheryl's (Madelaine Petsch) vision of an undead version of her brother Jason earlier in the season.
Series showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who also wrote "Afterlife with Archie," recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about this widely known fan theory, and while he could not reveal the plot for the "Riverdale" season 2, he did not discount the possibility of a zombie apocalypse happening later on in the show.
"There's a chance that happens," Aguirre-Sacasa said. "Ultimately we ended up starting with a more grounded, less supernatural version because we thought we could always go there, but if we started there, it would be hard to take that away."
Though the showrunner is unable to confirm or deny anything, he did go on to say that fans can expect a big genre change in "Riverdale" season 2.
"Afterlife or not, there will definitely be a big genre element to season 2," he said. "It's going to make people go, 'They're not really doing that, are they?'"
"Riverdale" will be returning this week with "Chapter Eight: The Outsiders" on Thursday, March 30 at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW.
