Samsung Gear S Available November 7 With Best Buy and Major Wireless Carriers
Samsung is gearing up to release the latest in its wearable technology, the Gear S smartwatch. The watch is slated for release in the United States on Nov. 7 and will be available with Best Buy, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless.
People who want the smartwatch without a contract will have to dish out full price for the watch. Carrier AT&T will be selling the watch for $200 on a two-year contract while Sprint and T-Mobile are offering the watch on monthly installment plans. Verizon on the other hand has not announced any pricings yet.
The Gear S was first announced late August earlier this year and is the successor to Samsung's Gear 2 smartwatch. The Gear S is the biggest of Samsung's smartwatch line with a 2-inch Super AMOLED curved screen with a display resolution of 480 x 360 pixels.
It runs on a 1GHz dual-core processor, 512GB of RAM, has 4GB of internal storage, and runs on a Tizen-based wearable platform – not Android Wear. The watch has cellular capabilities as well as Wi-Fi connectivity, up to 3G.
Previously, smartwatches were regarded as extensions to phones and tablets, beaming notifications and text messages to the screens of the watches. This somewhat eliminated the need for people to take out their phones or tablets everytime a notification popped up or a text message was received.
The Gear S may just be the first among Samsung's line of smartwatches which can function as a standalone device given Wi-Fi and cellular reception. Of course, it's not the only one in the market as other smartwatches are being designed with that standalone function in mind.
