Samsung Gear S for October Release, Available With Major US Wireless Carriers
The sixth in Samsung's line of wearable smartwatches, the Gear S, is speculated to come out sometime later this month. The Korean electronics giant announced that top wireless carriers in the U.S. will be offering the new device.
Of the four – AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless – AT&T already announced last week that preview and test units will be available in 125 of its retail stores across the country.
The Gear S will be getting a curved Super AMOLED screen face, which not the first in its line of Samsung's line of wearables but at 2 inches, it certainly will be the largest yet. Unlike with its previous offerings, the Gear S will have 3G connectivity, allowing users to be online without the use of a smartphone.
Samsung has been the first to delve into the market of wearable smartwatches when it first released the Galaxy Gear earlier this year, and now others are following suite including Apple, HTC, Motorola, and Sony. Apple already has the Apple Watch and Motorola's Moto 360 is coming soon.
The company first announced plans for the Gear S at the end of August, at the same time it was unveiling its wearable tech necklace called the Samsung Gear Circle. However, this time the company revealed more details about its upcoming device.
Apart from its big 2-inch curved display and 3G connectivity, it will also have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing it to link and sync to any comaptible and familiar smartphone. This will allow users to take and receive calls even without the smartphone.
Other specs include a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM as well as battery life lasting up to two days.
