Samsung Gear S vs. Apple Watch: Which Wearable Better Suits You?

In the market for wearables, there's no doubt that Samsung is currently the leader with their line of Gear smartwatches with their latest addition, the Gear S, scheduled for an October release. However, they might find themselves facing against upcoming opposition in the form of the Motorola Moto 360 and the Apple Watch.

The Moto 360 is clearly a different class in its own right with its round-face type design and standalone functionability. With the Gear S's square-type face design, it is clearly more suited to face off against the Apple Watch add in the two companies' long standing rivalry in the electronic device market.

The Samsung smartwatch's design is going to be similar to its other entrants with a curved Super AMOLED display. However, at 2.0-inches the Gear S is going to be the biggest of its line. The display has a 480 x 360 display resolution.

As for the hardware, it has a dual-core 1.0GHz processor, 4GB of internal storage and 512MB of RAM. It's going to be the first watch in Samsung's Gear line to run using the Tizen-based operating system instead of the Android Wear OS. It's main features will be its 3G connectivity as well as the ability to make and take SMS and calls, like a smartphone would.

The Apple Watch on the other hand – scheduled to be released sometime early 2015 – looks like a mix between the iPod Nano's design and the functionality of an iPhone. Still, it's a similar square-type design watch with a single knob and button at the side. There will be two size variants of the Apple Watch, the 1.5-inch and the 1.65-inch.

The Apple Watch is also apparently customizable with three different versions – the standard Apple Watch, the Apple Watch Sport, and a special Apple Watch Edition – bringing color options to six with stainless steel, silver aluminum, space black, space gray, 18-karat yellow gold, and 18-karat rose gold. Wrist bands are also swappable with other colors.

Specs are hard to guess as of yet but it is rumored to get the TouchID feature similar to the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 6. Battery life is also presumed to last the whole day and can be charged with wireless charging technology.

With either devices still to be released, it is hard to discern which watch will be better. Consumers will have to wait till the devices are actually released.
