San Antonio Spurs Trade News: Butler, McCallum Set For The Trading Block?

Two of the San Antonio Spurs' second stringers are on the brink of being released, as the team makes its last roster changes before the February 18 trade deadline.

According to a report by Lang Greene for Basketball Insiders, shooting guard/small forward Rasual Butler and point guard Ray McCallum Jr. are being named as the next in line to be traded. Greene's report described Butler and McCallum as "realistic trade assets," while also branding the Spurs as "complete a team as you can assemble."

The roster still consists of holdovers from its last championship run in 2014, namely Kawhi Leonard, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Tim Duncan, among others.

"Making midseason shakeups typically isn't the Spurs' usual way of doing business, but the efficient franchise is always on the hunt for pieces that fit their program," an excerpt of Greene's report reads.

The report also noted that despite the struggles of Danny Green and Manu Ginobili, the Spurs still holds the number two spot, as far as three-point percentages go, as they are averaging 39% per game.

The Spurs currently hold a record of 41-8, and are situated at the number two spot of the Western Conference standings, behind defending champions the Golden State Warriors.

The 36-year-old Butler has been in the league since 2002, when the Miami Heat selected him in the second round of the NBA draft of the said year. He jumped around through various teams such as the New Orleans Hornets, Los Angeles Clippers, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors, Indiana Pacers and Washington Wizards, before signing with the Spurs in September of last year.

For this season, he has played in 33 games, and has averaged 2.6 points, 1.3 rebounds, 0.6 assists, and 0.2 steals, through 8.8 minutes of playing time per game.

The Sacramento Kings, on the other hand, drafted the 24-year-old McCallum, in the second round in 2013. He played for D-League team the Reno Big Horns from 2013-2014, before being signed by the Spurs in July 2015.

For this season, McCallum has played in 22 games, and is averaging 2.5 points, 1.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 0.2 steals, through 9.5 minutes of playing time per game.
