A Game 7 in the World Series is one of those games that all players secretly would love to experience, and a game that attracts MLB fans across the nation. It is the ultimate stage in what many call America's game, and is the place where history is made, and reputations made…and broken.
Every baseball fan from the hardened professional to the dedicated Little League player dreams of taking part in the game-winning play in a World Series Game 7, and it is every fan's dream to be at the game to witness their team win the World Series in dramatic fashion in a Game 7 - a memory that will stay with them forever.
On Wednesday night, players and fans from the San Francisco Giants and the Kansas City Royals get to experience that thrill - but only one team will be able to raise the trophy by the end of the night. It is sure to be a dramatic and tense affair.
The Royals confirmed that a Game 7 would be taking place well before the final ball was pitched in Game 6 at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday night. They scored 7 runs in the second inning, and routed the Giants 10-0, which was the largest victory in a World Series shut out since 1985, when ironically it was the Royals who destroyed the St Louis Cardinals 11-0 in Game 7 of the World Series - the only time until now that the franchise has won the biggest prize in the sport.
That was before many of the current roster of Royals players were even born, but they will be looking at that series for inspiration tonight.
Royals Manager Ned Yost has spoken of the historical significance of a World Series Game 7, "When I was 10 years old hitting rocks in the back yard trying to hit it over the fence for a home run. I never one time thought, 'Bases loaded, two outs, bottom of the ninth, Game 5 of the World Series.' The childhood fantasy, of course, was always about Game 7.
Tonight will see Jeremy Guthrie start for the Royals, and he will be up against Giants' starter Tim Hudson. For this winner takes all match up, the Giants will also have star pitcher Madison Bumgarner, who claimed a shutout in Sunday's Game 5, available from the bullpen.
Historically it is the home team that has the edge in a World Series Game 7, however, the Giants themselves are looking to make history - with a win today they will join the New York Yankees as only the second team to claim a third World Series title in a five year span. The Royals, meanwhile, are trying to claim their second ever World Series title.
One thing's for sure; for one team's players and fans tonight, Kaufmann Stadium will be the place where dreams become a reality; for the other, dreams will be broken and the night will end in heartache.
Game 7 of the 2014 World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Kansas City Royals will start at 8 p.m. ET and can be watched on TV on the Fox network, or online through MLB.Com.
