'Scandal' Season 5 News, Spoilers: Kerry Washington Was 'Shocked' By Latest 'Scandal' Murder; Cast, EP Talk Fitz's Future

The latest murder in ABC's "Scandal" left many viewers understandably shocked and speechless, as it was Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) herself who committed the brutal crime.

In "Thwack!," Olivia murdered former vice president Andrew Nichols (Jon Tenney), whose taunts had caused the show's protagonist to get flashbacks of the time she was kidnapped and held prisoner. In the midst of her PTSD-induced haze, Liv basically lost it and violently attacked Nichols with a metal chair, bludgeoning him to death.

In season 4, Nichols, one of the show's least-liked characters, orchestrated Olivia's kidnapping to get Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) to begin a war with West Angola. He later suffered a stroke induced by Huck (Guillermo Diaz).

Washington spoke to E! News at the New York City premiere of "Confirmation," her new HBO film, and said that she was just as shocked as everyone else about the murder that occurred in last week's episode.

"I will say I was as shocked as you were, so everybody just breathe," the actress said with a laugh.

Meanwhile, as the new presidential candidates battle it out for the nation's highest seat, fans are left to wonder about what Fitz, the incumbent president, will do when a new Commander-in-Chief is sworn in.

"Scandal" creator Shonda Rhimes admitted to The Hollywood Reporter that they already have something planned for Fitz, though she declined to reveal what it is. Nevertheless, the Shondaland boss said that Fitz will still be around in the show's sixth season. "Tony is not going anywhere; where would he go?!"

Though fans will have to wait until the new season airs to find out what's next for Fitz, the "Scandal" cast members have weighed in on the fictional U.S. president's future. While Darby Stanchfield, who plays Abby, suggests that Fitz should build his own OPA, Washington says that he should start a foundation and "do some good in the world."

"He's got some demons to make amends for!" the "Scandal" star said. "So a good foundation that will do some good would be great!"

"He should just retire!" Portia de Rossi, who plays Elizabeth, said. "There is something poetic — maybe Mellie [Bellamy Young] will be elected and Fitz will be First Gentleman. Hopefully that will mirror Hillary and Bill in the White House."

"Scandal" airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
