'Scandal' Season 7 Episode 3 Spoilers: Fitz Resurfaces; Joe Morton Talks About Politics
After hiding from the public since he stepped down from office, Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) resurfaces in episode 3. Meanwhile, Joe Morton — who plays Papa Pope in the series — talks about the similarities politics on the show and in real life.
On the next episode of "Scandal" season 7, titled "Day 101," Fitz will be pulled back in the world of politics.
According to the episode listing on The Futon Critic, Fitz has been living a perfectly normal life in Vermont during Mellie's (Bellamy Young) first 100 days as the United States president.
However, on the episode 3 promo, Fitz wakes up to a crowd in his cabin greeting him, "Good morning, Mr. President." It appears that Fitz will be pulled back into politics. But Fitz might not be willing to go back in that world.
"This is our next chapter. At some point you have to let go," Fitz says on the promo.
But later on, Eli Pope gives the former president a visit, and it looks like he means serious business because of the gun he's waving around in front of Fitz.
Meanwhile, Morton shared in an interview with CNN how similar the world of politics in "Scandal" has become to the real world since President Donald J. Trump began office.
Morton said that a particular scene in season 7 brought him in tears because of how similar it was to reality.
"Fitz said something about 'You've always said that you would uphold the republic,' and Rowan's response was that there is no republic: 'Look around. The republic is in ashes, the Constitution is in shreds. We, the people, have been suffocated by their bare hands,' which is basically the definition of authoritarianism," Morton explained, talking about the script.
The actor then added that he believes that the demise of the Constitution and the fall of the republic are both connected to Trump's presidency.
"I think that unfortunately, it appears that Donald Trump is trampling all over the Constitution," Morton admitted.
"Scandal" season 7 airs every Thursday night at 9 p.m. EDT on ABC.
