'Sherlock' Returning With All-New Special and Episodes

"Sherlock" fans finally have an answer as to when their favorite neurotic detective will be returning! The BBC announced that filming for season four will begin in January 2015 and did so in a rather unique way.

"Did you miss me?" an avatar of arch-enemy Moriarty asked through the BBC One's Twitter page. "It's all gone dark … Something's coming … Or someone. Details at 2.21 pm tomorrow. #221back #Sherlock," the Twitter account read. "'Miss me?' #Sherlock, the hit @BBCOne drama, will return for a Special, followed by a series of three new episodes. #221 back … After the briefest of exiles, #Sherlock will return to face one of his biggest mysteries yet… #221back," it concluded.

According to the rest of the tweets, filming for the "Sherlock" special will begin in January and the rest of the series will start shooting later in 2015.

"We're ready to unleash the most shocking and surprising series of #Sherlock yet. The only thing is to expect is the unexpected… The Game is on – again!" more tweets read.

"It's taken a little while to get the dates sorted as none of the boys are exactly sitting back twiddling their thumbs but there was unanimous goodwill to make this work, so we're thrilled that 221b is going to be inhabited again," Sue Vertue, the show's executive producer, said in a statement.

"Sherlock" gained an immense following and has kept fans guessing as to when the new series would finally make it to air. Stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Martin Freeman (Watson) will return, as will Watson's wife Mary (Amanda Abbington). Fans should be warned that Mary will likely die soon, given that the series follows close to author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's writings.

"Series four! At last!" co-creator, writer and executive producer Mark Gatiss said in a statement. "It's always special to return to 'Sherlock,' but this time it's even more special as we're doing … a Special! Not only THAT, we'll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before. The whole 'Sherlock' team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on – again!"
