'Sherlock' Season 4 Release Date: Series to Premiere Early 2017 for New Season

Ever since the explosive special of "Sherlock" wrapped up, fans have been a little disappointed with the lack of information regarding season 4's premiere, but with some good news on the way, the anticipation may be eased somehow.

According to Den of Geek, PBS president Paula Kerger said during a recent press conference, "We do have the next Sherlock announced, coming up about a year from now."

This means that production may finally get a hold of both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman for shooting. As everyone knows, both actors have pretty hectic schedules, especially Cumberbatch, who is working on "Doctor Strange."

While the news is still not so good for many who have been waiting for the hit show's return, the announcement is considered to be the biggest yet that PBS has dropped regarding season 4's premiere.

Kerger added that fans know how "Sherlock" is being produced and much like filmmaking, the show doesn't only need a lot of time and effort but also the perfect timing to bring the two amazing stars together.

"As you know, they are produced almost like films and we're hoping the next one will be about a year from now," she explained.

It is too early to say that the show will return on New Year's Day of 2017, but it would be safe to speculate that production will be ready to show some trailers by the end of this year.

Aside from the release date, Kerger also dished a little about the season's theme. According to The Independent, she said the upcoming installment will be a mix of both darkness and fun. She also noted that some things of the past will be back to haunt fans. While details are very scarce about "things coming back to bite you," it is rumored that elements of the previous seasons may be integrated in season 4.

Information about cameo appearances are also scarce, but fans should expect that Cumberbatch and Freeman won't be replaced by any other actors anytime soon.
