Shonda Rhimes Finally Addresses Netflix Move

Shonda Rhimes finally revealed why she left TV for Netflix.

Rhimes, the woman behind hit programs such as "Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal" and "How to Get Away with Murder," is known for being ABC's superstar TV producer. However, she recently scored a major deal with Netflix, leading many fans to wonder what's next for the head writer as she makes her way into the streaming network.

The 47-year-old spoke with Recode on Monday and she revealed why she agreed to move to Netflix. "I love the creative freedom that's available there," Rhimes explained. "There's no restrictions. There's no broadcast standards and practices."

She added, "There's no 'It has to be this long' — I can make something that's an hour and a half long, I can make something that's 15 minutes long. There's no, 'We want to see more of this because that's what you've done before.'"

Rhimes revealed in another interview that she has never been worried about the ratings of all her shows, but Netflix's overall structure made her more interested to be on the company. Compared with ABC, Netflix does not disclose ratings information to the public and it has no advertising. This setup felt freeing for the TV producer because it made her believe there is an "open road there" that was difficult to resist.

As of this writing, further details about Rhimes' upcoming projects on Netflix are still being kept under wraps. She also remained tight-lipped about her new shows, but she did say she is looking forward to embark on a new journey in her career.

Rhimes' "Scandal" starring Kerry Washington is now on its seventh and final season. "Grey's Anatomy" had just opened its 14th season, while "How to Get Away with Murder" is now on its fourth installment.
